Pease International Tradeport
Long-Term Environmental Monitoring
Portsmouth, NH
Pease International Tradeport was developed as a result of the redevelopment of the former Pease Air Force Base which was closed under Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission action in the late 1980s and early 1990s. As part of an extensive environmental remediation effort, comprehensive environmental sampling programs have been established to monitor the movement of plumes containing chlorinated solvents, heavy metals, PCBs, and other contaminants.
As part of this initiative, EST performed environmental sampling and monitoring services at the expansive site over a six-year period. Monitoring services performed by EST’s OSHA-40 certified field chemists and licensed wastewater treatment operators. Services included well gauging and the collection of groundwater samples from several hundred monitoring wells annually. Samples were collected in accordance with EPA’s Low Flow Protocol. Bladder pumps, Fultz pumps, and peristaltic pumps were used in conjunction with multi-parameter meters and flow-through cells to measure and record stabilized indicator parameters including pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and ORP. Daily calibration of field analytical instruments and equipment decontamination was performed in accordance with project specific QA/QC procedures. In addition, EST field geologists and sampling technicians were responsible for the collection of QA/QC samples to assure representative sample collection necessary to generate accurate and reliable analytical data. Quality control samples were collected for all parameters and included duplicate samples, matrix spikes, equipment rinsate blanks and trip blanks. EST site personnel were responsible for appropriate sample preservation in accordance with 40 CFR part 136, chain of custody documentation, and packaging of samples for transportation to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) contract laboratory.
EST also provided operations and maintenance (O&M) services related to soil vapor extraction (SVE)/air sparge and groundwater treatment systems on site. Routine maintenance included the cleaning of clarifiers, air strippers, and oil/water separators; backwashing of GAC units; and operation and maintenance of catalytic oxidation units. System O&M also included air and water quality compliance sampling.
Services were performed in strict accordance with an established Quality Assurance Plan (QAP). All field work was completed to meet or exceed safety standards outlined in a comprehensive site-specific Health & Safety Plan.
